Das Königreich Kambodscha

Weiter geht es mit meinem Reisebericht. Nach Myanmar ging es noch für eine Woche nach Kambodscha. Wie sich herausgestellt hat, war diese Zeit viel zu kurz. So waren wir lediglich in der Hauptstadt Phnom Penh und in Siem Reap, in dessen Nähe sich die Tempel von Angkor befinden.

My report about my travelling goes on. After Myanmar we went to Cambodia for a week. In the end I got to know that this time is way too short. Therefore we went only to the capital Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, where you can find the temples of Angkor.

 

Kambodscha hat mir von allen Ländern am besten gefallen. Die wunderschöne Tempelarchitektur, die freundlichen Menschen, das leckere Essen, die bewegende Geschichte und die beeindruckenden Tempel von Angkor. Kambodscha hat mich wirklich umgehauen und sehr gerne möchte ich in Zukunft wieder mal dorthin. Es war eine wirklich interessante Erfahrung. Kaum "reicher" als Myanmar (wenn man von reich überhaupt reden kann, besser wäre es zu sagen : fast so arm wie Myanmar ) hat sich hier doch schon einiges getan. Meint man zumindest. Wir waren ja in den Touristenhochburgen und daher waren auch die Hotels und Restaurants in einem Top-Zustand (Wasser, Strom, Seife, Klopapier ;) Der Tourismus ist schon lange sehr wichtig für Kambodscha. So waren die Restaurants doch auch sehr verwestlicht. Man sah hier eigentlich nie Kambodschaner, nur Touristen sitzen... Das muss man erst mal schaffen. Das war natürlich schon etwas störend!

Cambodia was my favourite one of the countries we visited during this trip. The beautiful temple architecture, the friendly peope, the delicious food, the moving history and the impressing temples of Angkor. Cambodia was simply amazing and I hope I can come back in the future. It was also an interesting experience. A little wealthier then Myanmar ( well actually you can't talk of "wealthy", I should rather say "it was nearly as poor as Myanmar".), but it is a little more developped. Well you would guess it. As we were only in the cities with huge amounts of tourists ,the hotels and restaurants where in a top condition (water, electricity, soap, toilet paper). Tourism is very important for Cambodia. The restaurants seemed quite westernized. Actually you could not see any Cambodian person there, only tourists... That was a little annoying though.

Phnom Penh

Eine wunderschöne Hauptstadt; es ist hier genauso wie ich es mir in Südostasien vorgestellt habe. Es gibt viele schöne Tempel, einen beeindruckenden Königspalast und interessante Museen.

A beautiful city, it was like I imagined it to be in South East Asia. There are several nice tempels, the impressing king's palace and interesting museums.

Kambodscha folgt übrigens dem eher konservativen Theravada -Buddhismus, sodass die Kleiderordnung auch etwas strenger ist. Mit kurzen Hosen und Spaghetti-Trägertops darf man in den meisten Fällen nicht in die Tempel. Die Khmer  Architektur hat mich einfach überwältigt!

 

Cambodian people believe in the more conservative Theravada-Buddhism, therefore they are stricter about what you wear. With short trousers and tops you are often not allowed to enter a temple. The Khmer temple architecture was so beautiful!

Kambodscha hat eine furchtbar schlimme Zeit hinter sich, für die die Khmer Rouge die Verantwortung zu tragen hat. Man wollte wie in China eine Herrschaft des Proletariats und daher wurden Intellektuelle aus der Stadt vertrieben und in die Dörfer geschickt, wo sie von den Bauern das einfache Leben lernen sollten. Doch es ging so weit, dass Intellektuelle (dazu gehört auch lesen können oder eine Fremdsprache beherrschen), sowie vermeintliche Oppositionelle umgebracht wurden. Insgesamt wurde fast ein Viertel der damaligen Bevölkerung kaltblütig ermordet. Die Regierung hat ihre eigenes Volk quasi abgeschlachtet. Das ist mehr als ein Völkermord, das ist ein Völkermord gegen das eine Volk, ein sogenannter Autogenozid. So etwas gab es bisher nur in Kambodscha. Wir besuchten das Foltermuseum Tuol Sleng und die Killing Fields, in dessen Massengräbern immer noch Knochen und Kleidungsfetzen bei Regen an die Erdoberfläche geschwemmt werden.
Noch nie habe ich in meinem Leben etwas derart Grausames und Schlimmes gesehen (und ich glaube ich habe schon viel Schreckliches gesehen!). Für schwache Gemüter ist das nichts. Ich möchte auch aus Respekt keine Fotos posten. (Ich war auch fast nicht in der Lage, welche zu machen). Die Herrschaft der Roten Khmer war übrigens von 1975 bis  Ende 1978. Leider ist dieser Teil der Geschichte in Deutschland sehr unbekannt. Wen es interessiert, kann ja mal googeln.

Cambodia had a terrible time in the past and that is because of the rule of the so - called Khmer Rouge. Their aim was a dictatorship of the proletariat like in China, and therefore intellectual people were sent to the villages, where they were taught by the peasants how to live the simple life. In the end, intellectual people ( you were one of them if you could read or be able to speak a foreign language), as well as people who were assumed to be against the government were killed. Almost one quarter of the total population had to die. The government slaughtered their own people. This is more then a genocide, this is a genocid of the country's own people, a so called autogenocide. This has only been the case in Cambodia so far. We visited the torture museum Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields, were you can  still detect new bones and pieces of clothes after heavy rain in the mass graves. I have never seen such a terrible and horrofic thing in my life ( and I guess I already saw a lot of bad things) . I don't want to post any pictures of it. ( It was even hard for me to take some, as I think it is quite unrespectful). The Khmer Rouge ruled the country from 1975 till the end of 1987. Unfortunately this part of history is not that well- known in Germany. If you are interested about it, you should google it.

Armut

Kambodscha ist immer noch ein sehr armes Land. Und ignoriert man die gut entwickelten Touristenzentren, sieht man es auch.

Cambodia is still a very poor country. And if you ignore the well-developped touristic spots, you will see the poverty.

Siem Reap

Die zweitgrößte Stadt des Landes dient eigentlich immer als Ort für Ausflüge zu den Tempeln von Angkor. Neben dem berühmten Angkor Wat gibt es noch unzählige weitere Tempel. Angkor diente früher als Hauptstadt des Khmer- Königreiches. Von den normalen Häusern ist nichts mehr übrig geblieben, doch auch heute noch kann man die Tempel, die sich mittlerweile mitten im Dschungel befinden, bewundern. Mit einem Drei-Tages-Ticket schafft man es, die wichtigsten Tempel zu sehen. Störend waren die unglaublich riesigen Touristenmassen und die nervenden Souvenirverkäufer, die einem wirklich überall auflauerten. Das trübte natürlich die Mystik dieses Ortes.

The second-biggest city Siem Reap is the place to stay if you want to visit the temples of Angkor. Besides Angkor Wat there are countless other temples. Angkor was the ancient capital of the Khmer-Kingdom. The normal houses are all gone, but until now you can still visit the temples, which are surrounded by the jungle. With a 3-days -ticket you are able to visit the most important ones. The huge masses of tourists and the annoying souvenir-sellers, who were really everywhere, were really disturbing. And so mysticism of this place had to suffer.

Tuk-Tuk

Normale Taxis gibt es hier auch kaum, hier wird man mit einem Tuk-Tuk herumkutschiert. Schaut es euch an, es ist echt lustig und hat wirklich viel Spaß gemacht! Einmal sind wir raus aus der Stadt gefahren, und da es dort viel Staub und Abgase gab, hat uns unser Tuk-Tuk Fahrer zwei Masken gekauft. Das war total lieb! Aber trotz Maske habe ich kaum Luft bekommen...

Normal taxis are rare here, so you should take a tuk-tuk. Look at it, it is really funny! Once we went outside the city, the nice driver bought masks for us, because the roads were so dirty and dusty. But although I was wearing it, it was hard to breath...

Essen
Food

Oh, das Essen!!!! Es war einfach ein Traum. Ziemlich viele Gerichte gibt es mit Kokos und Curry und es war einfach alles überragend lecker. Mittlerweile bin ich soweit, dass ich Nudeln und Reis als Frühstück  Brot und Co. vorziehe ;) Zum Trinken gab es immer frische Kokosnuss. Das ist einfach ein herrliches Gefühl frischen Kokosnusssaft zu trinken! Die Restaurants und Bars waren zwar leider ziemlich verwestlicht, dafür ziemlich gemütlich. Die Kambodschaner wissen, dass die Touristen gerne draußen sitzen. In Taiwan sitzt man nie draußen, daher genoss ich das in Kambodscha umso mehr!

Oh, the food! It was a dream. A lot of meals are prepared with coconut and curry and it was super delicious. Now I have reached the point where I prefer noodles or rice for breakfast instead of eating bread or other western food.. For the drink I was always choosing the coconut. It was a great feeling, to drink fresh coconut-juice out of a coconut. The restaurants and bars were really westernized, but comfortable. The Cambodians seem to know, that tourists like to sit outside. In Taiwan you always have to sit inside, so I was really enjoying my time in Cambodia.

Hotels

Hotels sind ziemlich günstig in Kambodscha. In Siem Reap hatten wir ein Doppelzimmer in einem total tollen Hotel, in dem es sogar einen traumhaften Pool gab - für nur 5€ die Nacht.

The hotels are quite cheap here. In Siem Reap we had a double-room in a really nice hotel where we had even a nice pool for just 5 € per night.
